Acne vulgaris ("zits" or "pimples") affects nearly 100% of the population at some point. Although acne primarily affects adolescents, for many it can continue into adulthood. Acne causes scaly, red skin and blackheads or pimples. For some, acne is mild and transient; but for others, it can be severe and long lasting.
Acne can reduce self esteem, and can even cause feelings of depression. Kassir Dermatology believes no one should have to suffer from acne problems and offers advanced laser and light acne treatments designed to improve your acne and reduce redness and scarring.

Laser Acne Treatments
Successfully used to treat a wide variety of skin lesions in adults and children, advanced laser technology is now proving to be a powerful weapon in the battle against acne and acne scars. Laser treatment is designed to gently target and reduce the redness associated with inflammatory acne and acne scars. The laser can reduce erythema (redness of the skin), and can stimulate collagen to improve scarring.
This laser therapy works for all skin types, for patients that have not responded to traditional therapies, and those that cannot or do not want to take oral medications. The laser heats the p. acnes bacteria in the sebaceous glands. This heat can also reduce oil and sebum production, which can help symptoms. The skin becomes less oily thus minimizing acne breakouts. Many patients have reported seeing significant reduction within a few days, and clearance of acne after 3-4 treatments. The laser treatment for acne has minimal pain and has little to no down time.
Our advanced laser treatment is quick and effective, and causes few side effects. Laser and light treatments gently target and reduce inflammation. Lasers are often combined with other modalities such as Dermafrac and Microdermabrasion, and Dr. Kassir will recommend a treatment regimen that is right for you.
LED Treatment (Light Emitting Diode)
LED light therapy, also referred to as Light Emitting Diode light therapy (LED treatments), is another option when treating acne.
Our office uses two wavelengths when treating acne. We use the red LED and the blue LED. The blue LED Light treatment is designed to discontinue the growth of bacteria; the red LED treatment is designed to minimize inflammation and irritation of the affected area.
This treatment takes approximately 15 minutes for each light. When having the red and blue LED treatment in combination the treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. There is no down time to this treatment and may be repeated multiple times in a week or as many as your condition may require.

The pathogenesis of acne is currently attributed to multiple factors. These include:
Increased sebum production (oils in the skin)
Alteration of the quality of sebum lipids
Androgen activity (hormones that stimulates or control the development and maintenance of male characteristics)
Proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) within the follicle (bacteria)
Follicular hyperkeratinization
Depending on the etiology (cause) of the acne and the treatment course, acne may clear up in a few days or a few weeks or months. It is also important to properly diagnose and treat any other medical conditions that may have an effect on the acne.
No. Acne may continue into or develop in adulthood.
Absolutely. Steroids are an example of a medication which may cause acne.
Yes they can. Cosmetics and mechanical factors may be culprits in the etiology of acne.
Treatment for acne depends on what type of acne an individual has. If conventional therapy for acne has not been successful, there are several options such as LED therapy, micro-needling with infusion therapy, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments. Any of these can be used or a combination of treatments may be beneficial in treating acne.
The cost for laser treatment for acne depends on the type of acne, the frequency of treatments, the laser being used, and distribution of the acne. Call our office for more details and pricing.
Microdermabrasion improves oily skin by increasing the cell turn over rate, thus leaving the skin less oily. The treatment also helps sand down and smooth out scars caused by acne. It works by mixing gentle exfoliation with vacuum suction to remove the "dead" outer layer of skin. This treatment is used along with other procedures for optimal results and is safe to use on all skin types.
Acne is a common problem of over production of oil (sebum) of the sebaceous glands. Light Emitting Diode (LED) light therapy is advantageous because it works on all skin types. Blue LED targets a chemical in bacteria causing the bacteria to lyse (destroy itself). Red LED penetrates a little deeper than the blue, and it decreases the inflammation and redness caused by acne.
