Many fair-skinned people are plagued with the appearance of facial redness and pesky brown spots brought on by sun exposure, aging, and other genetic components. Luckily, there’s treatment available to help restore their complexion to its natural hue. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a technology that uses bands of light to treat brown spots, redness, age spots, broken blood vessels, and rosacea. Prior to treatment, the area is thoroughly cleansed and a cool gel is applied. The patient’s eyes will be covered with goggles to ensure protection from the bright light. IPL itself can be mildly uncomfortable, with some describing it as a rubber band snap sensation. Treatment usually lasts 20-30 minutes depending on the area, and is not recommended for patients with darker skin tones. The best results are seen after doing a series of 3-6 treatments roughly 4 weeks apart. To maintain results after completing the initial series, 1-2 maintenance treatments a year are highly recommended.
