Hair loss is a common condition that affects a majority of people at some time or another in their lives. The majority of the time it is genetic (also called Androgenetic Alopecia), but it can also be caused by thyroid disease, anemia, protein deficiency, chemotherapy, autoimmune destruction of hair follicles, or low vitamin levels. Hair loss, or alopecia, may present in several ways. It may be partial or complete and occur in any hair-bearing area of the body, although in our clinic we usually see patients present for hair loss of the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes.
Hair loss may occur in men and women of various age groups. At Kassir Dermatology in Dallas, we perform a comprehensive hair and scalp examination, and if necessary perform a total body skin/hair examination. We review all medications, obtain a detailed family history of hair loss, and order blood tests and view hairs under the microscope if necessary. After this detailed examination, we recommend the proper course of action for each patient.
